Political Prisoner Letter Writing

UPDATED: April 6th, 2013

GUIDELINES FOR WRITING PRISONERS

Use pencil or non-gel pen in blue or black ink.

No staples or glitter.

No torn-out pages of newspapers or magazines. You can print or photocopy articles and write your letter on the other side, however.

You can include photographs, but some prisoners have a limit to the number they can receive.

Include your return address inside the letter as well as on the envelope, as prisoners may receive your letter without the envelope. Number each page of your letter so the prisoner knows if they received all of it.

If writing to someone pre-trial, don’t discuss their case.

Prisoners aren’t looking for adoration. They are comrades in the same movements you are in.

Assume that law enforcement will see your letter.

JEREMY HAMMOND

Political activist from Chicago charged in a criminal complaint with crimes relating to the December 2011 hack of Strategic Forecasting, Inc. (Stratfor). One of six individuals from the United States, England and Ireland indicted, due to a cooperating witness, Hector Xavier Monsegur, known online as Sabu. Local profiles of Hammond by the Chicago press describe him as “connected to anarchist groups planning G8 and NATO protests,” “a lanky 27-year-old poster boy for anti-capitalist ‘hacktivists,’” and “a rock star to anarchists and cyberterrorists worldwide.” Supporters describe him as “one of the few true electronic Robin Hoods” in reference to a phrase by Hammond from a 2007 profile.

ERIC MCDAVID

Arrested on January 13, 2006 and charged with conspiracy to destroy property by means of fire or explosives. His arrest was the direct result of a government informant code-named Anna Davies who was paid over $75,000 to spy on and entrap Eric. The two others (Laura Wiener and Zachary Jensen) arrested with Eric both cooperated with the state, testifying against Eric. He spent almost two years in total separation (isolation) until after his trial. He has engaged in numerous hunger strikes to demand vegan food. He was sentenced on September 27, 2007 to 20 years in prison for a crime that was never committed.
